Satellites – Recreational Roller Derby

Learn, skate, and have fun. Roller derby skaters of all skill levels are welcome in Satellites. Whether you’re a retired speed skater or have never laced up skates, Satellites has a place for you!

2016sats_1Satellites is NSRG’s recreational roller derby league, which is separate from our competitive home teams or travel teams. This program provides an opportunity to learn and play roller derby without the time commitment or skill level required to play at a competitive level. The overall goal is to provide a safe place to learn, skate, and have fun for roller derby skaters of all skill levels. Whether you’re a retired speed skater or have never laced up skates, Satellites has a place for you!

Sessions are typically 8 to 12 weeks long with 1 or 2 practices each week depending on your level of commitment. Practices are held on Fridays and Sundays. We host sessions in the fall (Sept-Dec) and the spring (Jan-Apr). There are no tryouts for Satellites! All skaters are required to be 18 years or older, provide their own gear, and proof of primary health insurance.

Levels

While all skill levels are welcome, Satellites is divided into three levels, so all skaters can learn with other skaters of similar skill.

Space Cadets

Space Cadets (Level 1) is for anyone just starting on out their skates or those who need to brush up on basics. This level is strictly non-contact, focusing on on strength building and basic skating skills.

Space Rangers

Space Rangers (Level 2) is for intermediate skaters. Sessions will include more work on perfecting the basics, as well as an introduction to contact skills and skating in a pack.

Astronaughties

Astronaughties (Level 3) is the top level of Satellites. Our aim is to help skaters develop the skills needed to pass the WFTDA minimum skills test so they can scrimmage! Level 3 is full-contact, and drills focus on advanced skating skills, derby gameplay and strategy.

Level 3 Satellites are also eligible to be drafted to the league mid-season, if they’re interested. Some skaters (including league retirees) prefer to stay at the recreational level, and that’s fine too!
