The first members of the North Star Roller Girls (NSRG) met while skating for the TC Rollers in a suburban roller rink in Coon Rapids, MN. Their passion for derby was unconditional, but many of the skaters longed for a league that was skater-owned and operated. In June 2006, these enterprising roller girls split off from their old league and formed NSRG. By December 2006, the North Stars had a full roster of four home teams and were on a roll.
NSRG gained such a following in their first year that they outgrew their old home at Cheap Skate roller rink. Their second season (2007-08) brought them to the Minneapolis Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis. Along with the bigger and better digs, the league also established a travel team. The North Star Roller Girls Travel Team kicked off their first season with an impressive 6-1 record.
In December 2008, still early into their third season, NRSG became a part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), giving them the chance to be nationally ranked. The North Star Roller Girls Travel Team was named the North Star Supernovas, and they formed a recreational b-team, called the North Star Northern Lights. The Supernovas went 3-2 in 2009, ranking them #8 in the North Central Region by the summer. They smashed onto the scene of their first WFTDA regional tournament in September 2009 and skated away with 5th place.
Now in their fourth season (2009-10), the North Star Roller Girls are breaking their records with over 1,500 fans at their home opener. With a full season of hijinks, surprises, and hard-hitting derby action, you won't want to miss a moment!
